Set in the turbulent south in the 1950s, Memphis is the story of Huey Calhoun, a white radio DJ whose love of good music transcends race lines and airwaves. Thanks in part to his passionate persistence, "race" music reaches the center of the radio dial, quickly exploding throughout mainstream America. But when Huey falls for a beautiful black singer he has set on the path to stardom, whether the world is really ready for this music, and their love, is put to the test.

 

NEXT TO NORMAL

This new musical centers on what appears to be a typical American family: Dad’s an architect; Mom rushes to pack lunches and pour cereal; their daughter and son are bright, wise-cracking teens. And yet their lives are anything but normal, because the mother has been battling manic depression for 16 years. Next to Normal takes audiences into the minds and hearts of each character, presenting their family’s story with love, sympathy and heart.

SOUTH PACIFIC


Kelli O'Hara stars in the first Broadway revival of this classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical.

Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific is set on a tropical island in the Pacific during World War II, where US Navy nurse Nellie Forbush falls in love with local plantation owner Emile De Becque. Meanwhile, Lt. Joe Cable has fallen in love with young Liat, daughter of the irrepressible Bloody Mary. Both couples' happiness is threatened by the realities of the war and by their own prejudices. Also on the island are dozens of locals and Navy, all of whom seem to break into glorious song and dance at just the right moments.

Bartlett Sher directs this revival, the first time South Pacific has been seen on Broadway since its premiere in 1949. The original production garnered extraordinary acclaim and countless awards including nine Tonys and a Pulitzer Prize. The revival includes such classic songs as "Some Enchanted Evening," "Bali Ha'i," "A Wonderful Guy," and "Nothing Like a Dame."

THE LION KING

In The Phantom of the Opera, a young singer, Christine, is charmed by a mysterious specter who haunts the Paris Opera house. Based on Gaston Leroux's famous novel, the musical's tale begins as unexplained accidents have been occurring throughout the Paris Opera, and the stuck-up diva, Carlotta, refuses to go on. Christine takes her place and is a triumph. At her opening night, she meets her childhood friend, Raoul. Alone in her dressing room, she finally meets the Phantom who has taught her to sing so beautifully. Taking her to his lair in the misty catacombs beneath the Opera House, the Phantom declares his love for Christine, but she soon learns his terrible secret. The story moves from the Phantom's underground hideaway to the dizzying roof of the Opera House, as the Phantom and Raoul battle for Christine's love.

WEST SIDE STORY                                                               

 West Side Story tickets

The cast includes stars Tony Award nominee Brian d'Arcy James as Shrek, Tony Award winner Sutton Foster as Princess Fiona, Tony Award nominee Christopher Sieber as Lord Farquaad, Tony Award nominee Daniel Breaker as Donkey and Tony Award nominee John Tartaglia as Pinocchio. The landmark musical West Side Story returns to Broadway, directed by two-time Tony Award winning librettist Arthur Laurents. The show transports Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet to the turbulent streets of the Upper West Side in 1950's New York City. Two star-crossed lovers, Tony and Maria, find themselves caught between the rival street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds, the "Jets" and the "Sharks." The show features a book by Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The original Jerome Robbins choreography will be restaged by Tony Award nominee Joey McKneely.  This production, with an onstage cast of 37 and 30 musicians in the orchestra pit, will introduce the unprecedented element of selectively weaving Spanish throughout both the book and songs.

 

WICKED

Stephen Schwartz's new musical Wicked tells the story of two girls in the Land of Oz. One, born with emerald-green skin, is smart, fiery, and misunderstood. The other is beautiful, ambitious, and very popular. Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, the spellbinding musical takes a look at how these unlikely friends end up as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch. Joe Mantello directs. Winner of 2004 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical.

 

LA CAGE AUX

But things become slightly complicated when Fran Kubelik, the object of Chuck’s affection, becomes the mistress of one of his executives.  Preview date is March 27th, 2010.  Opening date is April 25th, 2010. 

 

COME FLY AWAY

Fifteen of the world’s best dancers tell the story of four couples falling in and out of love at a swinging nightclub on a sultry summer night, set to a score of beloved Sinatra classics including “The Summer Wind,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” “One for My Baby,” “My Way,” “Theme from New York, New York,” and “I’ve Got the World on a String.”  Preview date is March 1st, 2010.  Opening date is March 25th, 2010.

 

A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC

A Little Night MusicBased on Ingmar Bergman's film Smiles of a Summer Night, A Little Night Music is set in a weekend country house in turn of the century Sweden, bringing together surprising liaisons, long simmering passions and a taste of love’s endless possibilities. Hailed as witty and wildly romantic, the story centers on the elegant actress Desirée Armfeldt and the spider’s web of sensuality, intrigue and desire that surrounds her.

Catherine Zeta-Jones will not appear in A Little Night Music from 2/16 through 2/21 and from 3/30 through 4/4.

 

AMERICAN IDIOT

MILLION  DOLLAR QUARTET

Million Dollar Quartet

On December 4, 1956, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins gathered at Sun Records in Memphis for what would be one of the greatest jam sessions ever. Million Dollar Quartet brings that legendary night to life, featuring a score of rock hits that includes "Blue Suede Shoes," "Fever," "That's All Right," "Sixteen Tons," "Great Balls of Fire," "Walk the Line," "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On," "Who Do You Love?," "Matchbox," "Folsom Prison Blues" and "Hound Dog." The musical captures the singular moment when four major talents came together to become a red-hot rock 'n' roll band.

SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM

Sondheim on Sondheim

Strung together with songs both obscure and famous, Sondheim on Sondheim explores the life and creative process of its namesake composer, Stephen Sondheim, in the genius’ own words. Through the use of intimate interviews with its subject, the production shines new light on pieces of the artist’s autobiography, including his childhood, his relationship with mentor Oscar Hammerstein and stories of personal demons and professional triumphs. The show mostly focuses on his how he created the shows Broadway knows and loves today.

Everyday Rapture is the semi-autobiographical story of stage star Sherie Rene Scott, a small-town Kansas girl with a half-Mennonite (affectionately referred to as “Mennonite Lite”) background, Scott details how she followed the call of New York City all the way to Broadway. Now a successful, real-life semi-diva, Scott uses this “play with music” to chronicle her climb to the middle of the top, giving audiences comedic glimpses into the her religious upbringing, musical flashes of her dangerous journey into the depths of YouTube and a more complete portrait of one not-so-average blonde Broadway bombshell.

Ovo - Off-Broadway

OVO is a headlong rush into a colourful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement. The insects' home is a world of biodiversity and beauty filled with noisy action and moments of quiet emotion. When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the enigma and cycles of their lives. Cirque du Soleil returns to Randall's Island.

 

AVENUE Q

Avenue Q

Set on a mythical down-and-out New York City block, Avenue Q uses a cast of human and puppet characters to comically question the meaning of life—or, as the show puts it, finding one’s purpose. Armed with a B.A. in English, a puppet named Princeton arrives on Avenue Q and meets the neighbors: Brian, an out-of-work comedian, and his therapist fiancée, Christmas Eve; puppet roommates Nicky and Rod (a closeted Republican investment banker); puppet internet addict Trekkie Monster; Kate Monster, a cute puppet teaching assistant; and the building’s superintendent, Gary Coleman (portrayed by an African-American woman). As each character searches for his or her place in the world, the show hilariously skewers racism, careerism, dating, therapy and more.
